JEET KUNE DO - CONCEPTS
Jeet Kune Do, a Chinese dialect which means, "The way of the intercepting fist", utilizes trapping and various inside defense techniques such as knees and elbows. Jeet Kune Do teaches very evasive footwork and covers all ranges of attack, kicking range, punching range, trapping, and grappling -- making it an excellent source of self-defense. The philosophy of Jeet Kune Do was founded in 1962 by Bruce Lee. Lee's original art was Wing Chun Kung Fu. Wing Chun (a style founded by a Chinese nun) always assumes the practitioner is weaker than the attacker and, therefore, builds on that premise. However, due to some of the style's formality, Lee found the art to have serious limitations which made confrontations unnecessarily long. It was at that time he decided to make modifications and utilize some of the best techniques and philosophies from other arts, including American boxing and French fencing. These continual changes made Wing Chun more fluid and combat-orientated, thus giving birth to Jeet Kune Do. Jeet Kune Do continues to be studied and practiced by the best-of-the-best and remains to be the most influential art in the history of the martial arts, itself.
Jeet Kune Do is taught as a conceptual art used to make Taekwondo and Hapkido functional for self defense.
